Q: On August 5, the Japanese parliament adopted an act on special cases concerning the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act, which grants permanent visa waiver to Taiwanese tourists. What comment do you have on this?
A: The Chinese Government holds a clear and consistent position on the Taiwan question. There is only one China in the world and the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole China. Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory. Before the examination and approval of the act, the Japanese side had informed China and made due explanations for several times via diplomatic channels, in accordance with the understanding between the Chinese and Japanese governments regarding the relations between Japan and China's Taiwan. It clearly committed to continue to handle relations with Taiwan strictly in line with the principles in the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement. We hope that the Japanese side will live up to its own words and honor its commitments to China on the Taiwan question recorded in the three political documents, including the Sino-Japanese joint statement.
